Delhi-NCR Weather Alert: Despite mild sunshine during morning hours over the past two days, residents of Delhi NCR continue to feel intense cold. Ongoing snowfall in the Himalayan region is pushing icy winds towards the plains, keeping temperatures suppressed across the region.
Cold winds are currently blowing at a speed of around 19 kmph, causing a sharp dip in night temperatures. Daytime temperatures, too, have remained below 20°C, offering little relief even under clear skies.
Weather Likely to Worsen Again Today
The weather in Delhi-NCR is expected to deteriorate once again on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Yellow Alert for the region.
The alert warns of rain and thunderstorm activity, indicating that after January 23, the region may once again witness unsettled weather conditions. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially during travel and outdoor activities.
Rain Likely to Bring Relief From Pollution
According to the IMD, rainfall could also help improve air quality levels, which often worsen during prolonged cold spells. However, weather fluctuations are expected to continue.
Meteorological officials say the current western disturbance will not weaken immediately. Instead, another western disturbance is expected to become active around January 30, extending the period of unstable weather.
From January 28, minimum temperatures are likely to rise slightly, while maximum temperatures may remain largely stable. Weather conditions are expected to remain variable until February 1.
Possibility of Rain, Hailstorm and Strong Winds
Senior IMD scientist Umashankar Das stated that due to an intense western disturbance, several parts of the western Himalayan region are likely to experience light to moderate rain and snowfall on January 28.
He further warned that on January 27, some areas could witness heavy rainfall, snowfall, and hailstorms.
For the north-western plains, including Delhi-NCR, the forecast suggests:
Light to moderate rainfall in isolated areas
Thunderstorms with lightning
Hailstorms at select locations
Wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph
Additionally, another fresh western disturbance may start affecting north-west India from the night of January 30.
What Residents Should Expect
With repeated western disturbances, Delhi-NCR residents should prepare for:
- Continued cold conditions
- Intermittent rain and strong winds
- Temporary improvement in air quality
- Travel disruptions during thunderstorms
Authorities have advised people to stay updated with weather alerts and take necessary precautions during adverse conditions.
